They used the existing trail north onto the Rim, and at a point forty-seven miles north of Fort Apache they began blazing a new trail westward. On 28 May 1876, Brigadier General George Crook assumed direct command of the Bighorn and Yellowstone Expedition at Fort Fetterman. He fought at the battle of Chickamauga and was in pursuit of Joseph Wheeler during the Chattanooga Campaign.
